Five Reasons to Publish Your Book

The Ripple Effect of Publishing your book.
5 reasons to publish your book
1. You’ve suffered for it! Imagine all the painful
lessons you’ve learnt in life were not applied, what a waste that would be? Having
applied the wisdom that has come through pain and determination, wouldn’t
others benefit from it? Publishing your book will not only give you a sense of
purpose, but help others to make sense of their journeys as well.
Suffering in life has a way of perfecting you. When you have
spent years perfecting something, it becomes worth sharing. The problem with
many books is that the authors have not paid the price for the knowledge they
have curated for you. On the other hand, if there is a tested theory that has borne
fruit, it becomes a valuable read.
2.
It gives you traction in your industry. I
attended the book launch of a friend, Dr Stefan Fourie, who wrote “Work-based
Learning: A new perspective in developing managers in a South African context.”
When I realized that you could have multiple launches of your book, in
different venues, that opened up a whole tour for one of our latest
publications and we reached many more readers and potential partners. Dr Stefan explained that as a consultant, his
book opened new doors for him and gained him speaking opportunities in his field.
While not all authors are speakers, other doors could be book reviews and derivatives that could arise from your story and your life principles.
3.
“You add something to the life force of
humanity.” This is what my dad told me when I published my first book “Into
Orbit: Orbital systems for every organization.” Dr Andre Pelser, is a world mission’s
veteran to 124 countries and author of several defining books that have helped to
shape several non-profit organizations across multiple cultures. When you write
a book that is going to help others in any way, it becomes a contribution to the
life force of your time and perhaps of the future. This is particularly true
when you are not writing to generate sales, but to really add value. To take the
time, energy and resources to create something that will inspire and enlighten
your generation is a special grace. Books that have done that for me are books
from the Bible, like Acts written by Luke the physician, Ecclesiastes by King Solomon,
“The Seven Day Weekend” by Ricardo Semler, “Blue Ocean Strategy” and “Blue
Ocean Shift” by W Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne, to mention a few.
4.
Books can spark new business interests. It’s not
wrong to write for sales at all. People need more books to read and if you
write for their sake and they appreciate your work, it is a beautiful thing.
The reality for many new authors, is that they end up with boxes of unsold
books, wondering why they wrote at all! Consider some strategies for marketing
your book and spend some money on the process too, because no one can market
your book like you can. We had one of our books in a major retailer that sold
our books at malls and airports. We paid for the supply chain management and
storage of the books too. Later we evaluated our cost of sales and realized that
we can create pop-up stores wherever we were in the world, selling more books
out of hand at a lower cost. This worked for us at that stage. Now we are
building a facility that will also host our own bookstore and we are rethinking
our strategy for this phase. It depends where you are at in your journey. It helps
to have a coach that can mentor you through the stages and even help construct
your book with the end in mind. Are you trying to reach a particular reader?
What types of businesses will be derived from the concepts you explore in your
book? How can you establish traction in your industry through the publishing of
your life lessons?
5.
Your book will leave a legacy. I remember the first
time my book was accepted in our national library and it had an International
Standard Book Number that was permanent. There is a sense of belonging to a new
circle of existence! I am a bit of a dreamer! I have written and sold a few
hundred books by now to my circle of friends and partners. One of the best
moments of my writing career was a book signing at one of our Summits. The
event caused all of my most trusted and celebrated colleagues to be in the same
place at the same time, and we launched the book “Leader: Develop the Leader
within.” I physically signed and wrote a message for all of the patrons of the
book that day and spent the better part of an hour with those that had helped
me on my journey to becoming the author. It was a wonderful full circle event
in my life that I will always cherish.
If you would like to publish a book with our company Pelser
Media, we have very reasonable publishing costs and have connections with
excellent printers in Cape Town, South Africa. We look forward to hearing from
you and perhaps creating an event to launch your book too!
